Want to learn how to make hummus?

Making homemade hummus is one of the easiest appetizer recipes that creates a truly satisfying dish. With only a few ingredients and 10 minutes you can get this fast snack idea on the table. Using a homemade hummus recipe is also significantly cheaper than buying it from the store! For a more complete appetizer idea try using the hummus in a Crudites Charcuterie or a Mediterranean Charcuterie!

What is hummus made from?

Hummus is made from chickpeas, lemon juice, olive oil, and tahini paste. If you haven't heard of tahini before, it is a paste made from sesame seeds that is similar in flavor and texture to cashew butter. Conveniently, all the ingredients can be found at basic grocery stores!

Substitutions:

Substitution for tahini: You can use either cashew butter or sunflower butter.

Substitution for ice cubes: You can use 3 Tbs of water instead.

What kind of olive oil is best? I recommend extra virgin! But you can use whatever olive oil you have on hand.

Let's Begin!

Gather your ingredients. Juice the lemon and strain the juice. Strain the chickpeas and keep 1/4 cup of the liquid. This liquid is also called aquafaba and is often used as an egg substitute in other dishes, so consider keeping the rest.

Add to the blender the chickpeas and the 1/4 cup of their liquid, the lemon juice, 1/3 cup tahini paste, 1 large clove of garlic, 2 Tbs olive oil, 2 ice cubes, and 1/2 tsp salt. Blend the ingredients in the blender for a few minutes until nearly completely smooth. If the mixture is too thick for your blender you can add water or oil 1 Tbs at a time until it can blend. Taste, and if needed add another 1/4 tsp salt, or to taste.

Pour it into a bowl, drizzle it with olive oil, and add a sprinkle of sumac, zaatar, or smoked paprika. Serve with warm pitas or sliced veggies.

Enjoy!
